Meridian Retaining Walls helps Meridian and Treasure Valley homeowners find local contractors for retaining wall installation, replacement and repair, for homes and commercial sites. Here’s the first thing to know: a wall here needs a permit once it’s over 4 feet, and that’s measured from the bottom of the footing, not from the lawn. The second is the ground. Meridian’s frost line is 24 inches, and on the valley’s terrace soils a cemented hardpan sits 20 to 40 inches down, so a footing dug to frost depth can run into it.

Call us with the wall’s length and height and a couple of photos, and we can talk it through. Tell us what’s above it, too. A driveway or patio up top changes the job.

The length, the height and what sits above it are enough to start the conversation.

What does a retaining wall cost in Meridian?

Most of a retaining wall’s price comes down to how big the wall face is and what it’s made of. Take a 40 ft by 3 ft wall, which is 120 square feet of face. At typical national rates it comes to $1,800 to $4,200 in interlocking block, and $2,400 to $10,800 in natural stone or boulder.

Those are national published ranges, not a quote for your wall. Height, drainage, machine access and an old wall coming out all move the number, and permits are extra, published at $40 to $450. The retaining wall cost page breaks prices down by wall type and by size, with the add-ons listed too. Or call with the length and height, and we’ll help you find a local contractor who can price yours.

How long does a retaining wall take in Meridian?

Three things set the schedule before anyone digs.

First, the utility locate. Idaho’s dig law says the locating service has to be notified at least 2 and not more than 10 business days before digging. Second, the permit. Meridian lists a residential permit at 7 to 10 business days from submittal to approval with in-house review, as last published by the city in 2021, so check the current timing with Building Services. Third, and slowest, a wall by a canal: the Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District’s land use change packet gives roughly six weeks of standard review from submittal.

Ask for the build time in writing with your quote.

Does my retaining wall need a permit or an engineer?

Under the residential code Idaho has adopted, you don’t need a building permit for a retaining wall that’s 4 feet or less, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless it supports a surcharge. Meridian Building Services applies the same rule, and a wall over 4 feet needs a Residential Miscellaneous permit.

Where the tape starts changes the answer. Meridian counts from the bottom of the footing, so the part of the wall you can see is shorter than the part the permit rule sees. If your design lands near 4 feet, ask Building Services how it measures before you settle on a height.

A surcharge is any added weight above the wall. Block manufacturer guidance names patios, swimming pools and driveways as the common residential ones. The code requires an engineered design for a wall that retains more than 48 inches of unbalanced fill, or for a wall more than 24 inches tall that resists loads besides soil.

How a retaining wall is built in Meridian, step by step

  1. Site and loads The first thing to pin down is what sits above the wall.
  2. Permit and HOA approval A wall over 4 feet needs its permit. Check whether you have an HOA, too: 77.0 percent of Treasure Valley homes sold in July 2026 carried HOA dues, according to one published count of closed sales.
  3. Locate, dig and build The locating service is notified inside the dig law’s window. Then the trench, the gravel base, the block and the drain rock go in, layer by layer, as the retaining wall installation page lays out.

Leaning walls, price gaps and canal-side lots

  • Worried a new wall will lean? In a 2013 database of 171 failed geosynthetic-reinforced walls, 86% of failures happened within four years, 98% were put down to design or construction and 60% were water-related. Ask more about the gravel and drain pipe than about the block face.
  • Two prices thousands of dollars apart? Check what height each one is pricing. One published price table has 50 linear feet at $2,000 to $6,000 when 2 feet high and $6,000 to $18,000 at 6 feet.
  • Lot beside a canal or drain? Meridian’s code requires written approval from the irrigation or drainage entity for any encroachment on a ditch. The Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District allows work that affects water flow only from October 15 to March 15, unless its water superintendent says otherwise, and wants plans by January 15.

What a retaining wall quote should include

The first three are worth having ready when you call. The rest should be on any quote before you sign.

  • Length and height Taped or paced, with the height taken at the tallest point.
  • What sits above the wall A driveway, patio, pool or slope.
  • Photos The whole run, both ends, and any lean, bulge or crack up close.
  • Removal and base Tear-out and hauling as their own line. Base thickness and buried block in inches.
  • Drain rock and pipe Whether a pipe is included. Block manufacturer guidance requires one behind a wall over 4 feet, and at any height in silty or clay soil.
  • Engineering and permit Who pays for stamped plans and the permit. Idaho requires a contractor to be registered for any job over $2,000 in labor and materials and to carry at least $300,000 of general liability insurance.

Retaining wall questions Meridian homeowners ask

How much does a retaining wall cost in Meridian?

A typical retaining wall project runs $3,500 to $9,400, going by a national cost guide updated in October 2026. Your own wall comes down to its size and your site.

Who builds retaining walls near me in Meridian?

An independent local contractor. Call Meridian Retaining Walls and we’ll help you find one who works in your city. We cover Meridian, Eagle, Star, Kuna, Garden City, Middleton, Caldwell and Nampa, for new walls, replacements, repairs and commercial walls. Whoever you hire, check Idaho registration: an unregistered contractor can’t pull a permit.

Can a leaning retaining wall be repaired?

Not a segmental block wall, by pushing it back. Forcing a leaning segmental wall can crack blocks and break the base, according to a regional block manufacturer, whose advice is to take the wall down, correct the base, drainage and setback, then restack.

Do retaining walls need drainage?

Yes, for a block wall. One manufacturer’s installation guide says of the gravel layer behind the wall: “Without this layer the wall will fail.”
